Is this a problem for anyone else? I should have asked years ago.
Ric
Steering Column noise.
A sharp tap which sounds as though it is in the top of the column, or very far up it in my 1954 R-Type Bentley, B101WG.
How do I describe it best? It’s a sharp tap, but not a rattle, which only occurs when I drive over a bump, such as a small pot-hole, rumble strip, misaligned concrete sections in a road, or anything which would feel like a sharp bump at 30-35 mph or higher. If I’m holding the steering wheel loosely, the sharp tap will sound. If I’m holding it moderately tightly, as I would be in a crosswind or going around a corner, then no sound, even if I hit any of the aforementioned. If when driving I hit the top right hand side of the cover with my hand, the tap is reduced temporarily. If I hit the steering wheel when stopped, I can cause the same tap to occur. In looking at where the cover is connected to the “stationary tube assembly,” the three pieces are securely attached to each other.
I’ve reviewed the “Service Handbook,” H.4 - H.12, and talked with both a Bentley specialist and a steering column specialist. Neither provided resolution, so the question is, has anyone encountered the problem, and if so, what was their solution?
